Start your first meeting

Let everyone know you are recording, choose the language people will speak, and allow microphone and speech access when asked. The first use of a language may need time to prepare its speech assets. On Mac, including sound from a meeting app is optional; you can start with just your microphone.

The current App Store releases are Recognizing 1.0.2 for Mac and Recognizing Captions 1.0.1 for iPhone and iPad. Both are free and require version 26 or later of their operating system. Install them using the App Store links.

The latest updates simplify recording and review, let you return a Mac meeting record to its original phone conversation, and add optional on-device image descriptions. The iPhone and iPad app also lets you choose to keep recording audio while locked and has a new icon matching the Mac app.

Microphone or Speech permission is unavailable

Open Settings in Recognizing and review the permission status. On Mac, use System Settings → Privacy & Security. On iPhone or iPad, open the system Settings page for Recognizing Captions. Quit and reopen the app only after an active recording has been stopped and saved.

The first local speech model takes time

Apple manages speech assets per language. Keep the device connected to power and the internet while preparing the selected language, then retry after the model reports that it is ready.

Which spoken language should I choose?

Choose the main language of the conversation. Available languages depend on Apple's on-device speech support for your device. Switching between languages, overlapping speakers and unfamiliar names can reduce accuracy. Check important names, dates and commitments against the conversation.

On Mac, you can add names and technical terms before recording. This helps with specialised vocabulary but does not guarantee a correct transcript.

Can I lock my iPhone while recording?

Yes. In version 1.0.1 or later, turn on More Options → Continue when locked before starting a conversation. This keeps audio recording when you lock the screen or switch apps. The choice is off by default for each new conversation.

Without that choice, keep the app open and your phone unlocked while recording. Calls and microphone-route changes can still pause recording in either mode. Recording never resumes automatically after an interruption; reopen the app and check before continuing. Keeping audio recording does not guarantee uninterrupted live captions while the phone is locked.

Add a photo or recognise text on iPhone or iPad

During an active conversation, open Attach Photo and choose Take Photo or Choose Photo. Camera access is needed for Take Photo. Choose Photo uses the system picker to share only the images you select. Review recognised text against the original image; recognition can make mistakes.

Add an iPhone photo to a Mac recording

While recording on Mac, choose Add from iPhone and use Apple's camera menu to take a photo with a nearby compatible iPhone. Confirm the photo on your phone to attach it to the Mac recording. If your phone is unavailable, choose Import Image or Scan to add a saved file instead.

Continue an iPhone conversation on Mac

In History, open the saved conversation and choose Details → Prepare for Mac. Then use Send to Mac or Files to share the capture. On Mac, choose File → Import iPhone Capture… and select the exported file.

The capture includes captions, corrections, notes, attached photos and recognised text, and a saved record when available. It does not include raw microphone audio, device file paths or provider credentials. Keep exported files private. Importing a capture does not itself send its contents to an AI provider.

A capture already imported with the same recording identifier cannot be imported again. An imported record needs regeneration on Mac before Export Copy is available. Before regenerating, check the selected provider: a cloud provider you configure may receive the text needed for that operation.

Return a Mac record to iPhone

Use Recognizing 1.0.2 on Mac and Recognizing Captions 1.0.1 on iPhone or iPad, or later app versions. On Mac, choose Export Copy → Return Record to iPhone and send the saved file by AirDrop. If the phone opens Files or Quick Look, open Recognizing → History → Import → Receive Mac Record and select the file. Review it and choose Add to Conversation. The original phone conversation must still exist with matching evidence; the accepted copy appears under Summary → From Mac.

This adds a separate copy alongside the original conversation; it does not replace your phone's audio, captions, notes or photos. For a conversation imported into an older Mac app, keep your original phone capture: the older Mac copy may not contain the information needed to return a record.

Describe a saved image

Mac 1.0.2 and iPhone or iPad app 1.0.1 or later include optional Describe Image for a saved photo or capture. It needs macOS, iOS or iPadOS 27 and a ready, compatible Apple Intelligence image model. Processing stays on the device, with no automatic cloud fallback. If the model is unavailable, the saved image and recognised text remain usable. Check the description against the original; it is not automatically added to the meeting record.

Check a record before sharing it

On Mac, use the review checklist and playback to check individual passages. Start with the parts that matter to you, such as a decision, a name or a deadline. An audio-gap warning is a prompt to check the recording, not proof that someone was speaking.

Inspect the source references for important decisions and action items, compare them with the transcript and notes, and correct any transcription mistakes. A source reference helps you inspect the evidence; it does not prove that a generated statement is accurate. Imported iPhone captures do not include audio for playback.

Delete local data

Use the per-recording delete action for one meeting, or Settings → Delete All Local Data for Recognizing-owned content. Deletion cannot remove a copy you previously exported or text already sent to a cloud provider you configured.

Recording consent

Recognizing cannot determine whether a conversation may legally be recorded. Inform participants and obtain any consent required by the laws and policies that apply to you.
